 The system seems to have problems April 12, 2010

The battery is great, no, the battery is AWESOME; The exterior design is a bit different than what I'm familiar with, but grows on you. The computer its self is great, it's the software that is the problem; it just plain doesn't work that well, I've had to reboot the computer twice in the 3-4 months I've had it. I used to have a U100 MSI netbook and it's system worked fine, so it's not MSI thing, it's a U123 thing.
 Good Netbook --but hardware annoyances January 17, 2010

The MSi Wind Netbook U123-003 is one of the better MSi design model, and the quality has improved over the U100 model. Hardware annoyances: jumpy touchpad/mouse, MIC does not work (..no rsolution on that), etc. Overall though, it is a good versitale Netbook for basic use.
I don't believe a Netbook, of any brand, is a good value as compared to a small form-factor Notebook. As good as the MSi Wind U123 is, I cerrtianly would not buy another Netbook of any brand.

I bought the MSI Wind U123-003 to use in the field while I work for my computer consulting company, i-SupportDesk, and now I use it as my primary workhorse! I bought a 2GB memory upgrade, a bluetooth mouse, and some USB powered speakers and I am sitting pretty! I have a colleague that has the ASUS 1000HA, another top-notch netbook, but I think we both like the WIND a little better!

I won't make this a long in depth review. Most netbooks are based on the same hardware and there is very little difference between them. This netbook is no exception. I chose this one because it does have the slightly faster N280 processor, Wireless "N", and a nice big battery.
The unit delivers as promised. The screen is bright and you can surf reasonably quickly. You will get 6 - 7 hours on the battery.
For whatever reason, MSI decided to include a horrible built in mic. You may never use it and it may not be important to you but if you plan on using it, you will be disappointed. At the default settings, the microphone is not picked up at all unless you shout at the top of your lungs. If you can find the hidden microphone boost setting, your voice will be picked up as a whisper. Searching around, this is a known problem with the model.
The case included with the netbook is not made for a unit with the extended battery. The computer fits in but you cant close the case because of the huge battery.
If you never use the microphone, give this 4 - 5 star rating. If you buy this and plan to use the microphone, also purchase a good headset with mic.

Just got my red MSI u123 (9 cell) last night. I am NOT tech-y at all and set it up in 20 mins with ease. The battery bump serves to elevate the back of the computer, which is really a thoughtful and useful solution to what might have been aesthetically really ugly. Some power users might find it a little heavy, but after carrying around a 7-pound full size laptop AND and A-5 Filofax, it feels like a feather to me :).
I have read reviews complaining that the netbook does not fit the case, but it really does. Here's the trick: first put the charger and power cord in the accessory pocket (Uncouple them so that the cords will lay smoother) THEN, holding the netbook by the battery, insert it into the case, making sure that the bottom of the netbook faces the accessory pocket. (The battery will be at the open end after insertion) If you do it this way, the cords in the accessory pocket fit into the natural space formed by the bulge of the battery. It is snug, but it definitely fits. (with room for a flash drive and maybe even a mini mouse in the accessory pocket as well)
