1 out of 5 stars BEWARE THIS COMPANY!   August 28, 2010
Meiguo Nuren
This is a great device until something goes wrong. Had it for 3 months (there is a 12 month warranty) , routine use, great size, worked well until it blue-screened. First call to the company started by asking me if I would like to purchase an extended warranty. When I said "No" I was transfered to an East Asian phone bank. The technician diagnosed "a virus" and offered to diagnose further and potentially to fix this after I paid $[...] for a one year telephone support contract. To assess this course of action before plunking down that large sum, I had a computer expert in the family look at it. His thorough assessment diagnosed hard drive failure -- "disk error" reporting out in the event log multiple times a minute. I called them back with this detailed information and a different technician determined it was probably hard drive failure after all and offered their warranty service, but this requires sending the device to Texas - even though I live in the heart of the Silicon Valley there is no local repair option. Shipping is at the customer's expense, and anything happening as a result of shipping is the sender's fault. Perusing others' experiences online,I noted that many have been notified that their warranties are invalid once the computers are received in Texas, due to damage that was not present when shipped, and many had been told they need to pay Acer $[...] to repair whatever is wrong for this reason: [...]

And then there is the extra cost for all of the free software, no longer free after the first 30 days. So to repair a device costing about $[...], the cost would be about $[...] for courier shipping and insurance, plus potentially another $[...] for the repair of shipping damage scam (or another $[...] to get the unrepaired device back) , plus the cost of new software. This would be nearly the cost of the original device. And that is best case, assuming the device works when returned (see above links -- not at all a given).

An alternate solution: a replacement hard drive can be purchased on Amazon for around $[...], and if you buy the replacement software, at least you then have it for future use. And, of course, there is the benefit to your health as the result of reduced stress response ...

4 out of 5 stars Acer Netbook   August 7, 2010

I had a netbook previously, but wanted one with a tad bigger screen. This netbook is great. The only thing is that the advertisement said a 10 hour battery, but most of the time it is around 6-8 after recharging. I would still recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy   August 1, 2010

Great little notebook for the price. So much easier to use than a bulky laptop. We just wanted something simple to use mainly for email and for traveling. Picture is great, keys a little small, but you get used to it. Battery life is unbelievable. Definitely worth the price!!

4 out of 5 stars Great little computer-only a few tricks   July 31, 2010
David R. Todd (Milwaukee)
I received my Acer a couple weeks ago now. No complaints except the expected ones - the keyboard is tight so you end up doing more "hunt-and-peck" typing and I'm not a fan of the touch-pad mouse, so I use a small travel optical mouse when I can. Oh, and the screen has a little glare. That's all I can gripe about. It's so light and tiny, I can take it anywhere. The three USB ports make it easy to use many add-ons like the optical drive I bought (pretty much to import CDs). Enjoy.
